Gliders Guide

It’s as close as you get to having wings, and Lumby is the worlds centre for these amazing adventure experiences. Hangliding enthusiasts will appreciate the bird’s eye view they will get flying through the sky over Lumby. A favourite for both local and visiting pilots, the Cooper’s Launch is a public launch site found up Trinity Valley via Defies Creek. Saddle Mountain is also a great private launch, but is restricted to those accompanied by a local pilot. King Edward and Vernon Mountain both provide a gentle grassy slope for take-off and have no shortage of large fields for landing. Because of its friendly people and winds, semi-arid climate, numerous safe launches, and of course the Great Thermal Lift, Lumby and area is known all over the world as the Hangliding and Paragliding competition capital of Canada!

The Lumby Air Force started in 1975 when they hosted the first Hangliding competition during Lumby Days. Since then many National, Provincial, and Regional competitions have been successfully hosted in Lumby, and we have the best areas for racing around a course rather than just racing down wind. This requires an extra level of pilot proficiency to win this type of event. Launching from Lumby leads into one of the best routes in British Columbia. Your journey begins at the edge of the Okanagan, above the Gateway to the Monashee, and loops back towards the beautiful Arrow Lakes, far above the Needles Ferry. The round trip flight is an amazing journey for many adventurous pilots.  To learn first hand about the hangliding and paragliding in Lumby, visit the Monashee Tourism website.

Monashee Provincial Park

One of the most spectacular places in British Columbia is only a short drive from Lumby. Monashee Provincial Park is filled with old growth forests and lush alpine meadows. The park is an amazing place for both experienced outdoorsmen and budding backpackers. The only access to the park is by foot; a group can take a day and explore Spectrum Lake which is a short hour-and-a-half hike from the parking lot, or they can really get their “gaitors wet” and take on the six hour hike up to Peters Lake to see what the park truly has to offer with crisp, clean alpine air and awe inspiring mountain peaks, the highest in the park being Mount Fosthall.
